The Island’s connection to a social enterprise in Ghana

It was a rumour in Ghana that got the wheels of industry turning on Prince Edward Island. Gideon Banahene, the owner of Danso Bamboo Bicycles, was in his home country when he first heard about bamboo bikes. “About two and a half years ago, I was in Ghana and I heard about this new initiative in rural areas using bamboo to make bicycles,” he recalls.

“Through my research I contacted Kwabena Danso who is the owner of Booomers bicycles.” Banahene was interested in selling Danso’s bikes in North America. After researching Danso’s company, Banahene decided he wanted to be a supplier. “I decided ‘You know what? I think North America needs this,’” he says. “So I got the rights and started importing the frames here in Canada.”
